DIET DECODER

Dietitian Lisa Drayer and nutritionist Cassandra Forsythe sorts through the ever-changing weight loss advice floating around

CHOCO THERAPY

For a nutritious sugar hit, embrace the dark side…

The best news we’ve heard all year: studies prove chocolate is good for more than a broken heart. The secret behind its powerful punch: cacao. Packed with healthy flavonoids and the chemical theobromine (which widens blood vessels), this little bean is a disease-fighting bullet. The problem? Cacao is bitter, chalky and hardly palatable. Enter milk, sugar and butter – great for tastebuds, not so for health. Besides adding kilojoules, they dilute cacao’s benefits. So stick to chocolate with at least 70 per cent cacao – or cocoa, which is cacao in roasted, ground form – says Dr Mary Engler, a professor of physiological nursing. And limit yourself to 200g a week (that’s two blocks of Lindt Excellence).

A healthier heart

The brown stuff can reduce blood pressure, increase the flexibility of veins and arteries, and cut down on stroke and heart attack risk. Most of the credit goes to flavonoids, which kill off free radicals, and polyphenols, (also found in red wine). Polyphenols are known to prevent LDL (bad) cholesterol from oxidising into a form that damages arteries.
Tastes better than: an apple, which has only 20 per cent of the flavonoids of a dark chockie bar.

Cough relief

A study by Imperial College London found that chocolate is around 30 per cent more effective at suppressing persistent coughs than anything available from pharmacies. A stimulant called theobromine, which also provokes chocolate’s feel-good effect, appears to suppress the activity of the vagus nerve, which is responsible for coughing. Theobromine was found to be about a third more effective than codeine, which is regarded the best available cough medicine.
Tastes better than: codeine, which can leave you sleepy and dull.

Happier kids

Babies whose mums ate chocolate daily during their pregnancy are happier than babies whose mums rarely ate it. A study of 300 women by the University of Helsinki in Finland found the babies of chocolate-eating mothers smiled and laughed more, and showed less fear of new situations, possibly because the feel-good effects of the sweet are passed on to little ones.
Tastes better than: chewing on your screaming kid’s dummy.

Guard against diabetes

Confectionery a diabetes foe? Sure is! In an Italian study, participants who ate a bar of dark chocolate once a day for 15 days saw their potential for insulin resistance drop by almost half. “Flavonoids increase nitric oxide production,” says the study’s lead researcher Dr Claudio Ferri, a professor at the University of L’Aquila in Italy. “And that helps control insulin sensitivity.”
Tastes better than: cherries, which have just 18 per cent.

MAKE LIPSTICK LAST

We called in the expert: Nicole Thompson, senior artist for MAC, shares her lipstick-staying power tips
Go bold Whether they’re glossy or matt, deep and bright colours generally last longer than soft or natural shades. The pigment in these tends to be much stronger, so they stain the lips.
Prep lips First thing – add moisture. Dry lips can ruin a beautiful colour. Pat a lip conditioner all over the lips. Once moisturised, apply a lip primer, like MAC Prep + Prime Lip, $33, taking it slightly over the outer edge of the lips.
Pencil it in Using a lip pencil (that matches your lipstick) will help to hold colour on and make the application more polished. Make sure lips are well moisturised before drawing the line, so the pencil won’t drag and look fuzzy. Do a strong outline of the lips to create the shape, and then feather the colour in to completely cover the lips and act as a base.
Brush up Just like nail polish, two to three sheer coats of lipstick works better than one thick layer. Having applied pencil, use a lip brush to colour in the lips lightly with your lipstick. Blot with a tissue, then repeat the light layer of colour.

Weight loss and your liver

Weight gain can be a sign that your liver isn’t functioning well. Blackmores online personal trainer Andrew Cate investigates the link between lifestyle and liver function.

What role does the liver play in regulating weight?

The liver has an important role to play in maintaining a healthy body weight. In addition to controlling hormonal balance, the liver produces bile that emulsifies and absorbs fat in the small intestine. However, if your liver lacks essential nutrients or is overwhelmed by toxins, it will stop functioning efficiently. And if there is not enough bile produced, fat may be stored instead of processed.

How does lifestyle impact upon your liver?

While the impact of excess body fat on your heart and joints is well known, there is also a significant effect on your liver.

A recent study found that too much fast food and too little exercise can harm the liver in as little as a few weeks. Healthy volunteers ate two fast food meals a day, and adopted a sedentary lifestyle. At the end of the 4 week study, 61% of the volunteers had abnormally elevated levels of a liver enzyme (ALT) that rises with inflammation and injury to the liver. Liver scans also showed an average threefold increase in the amount of fat in the liver compared with benchmark readings from before the study.

This study supports additional research which found that physical activity can bring about improvements in people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

What is NAFLD?

NAFLD, also known as hepatic steatosis, is thought to affect up to one third of the adult population. The liver becomes slightly enlarged and heavier because the liver cells and the spaces in between are filled with fat.

The symptoms of NAFLD
  • Excess body fat, especially in the abdominal area
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Insulin resistance
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent illness from problems with your immune system

Can NAFLD be reversed?

Losing excess body fat, or maintaining a healthy level of body fat, is important for enhancing liver health. By helping your liver function efficiently, the body will find it easier to metabolise fat and prevent fat storage.

Natural therapies to improve liver function
Both artichoke and dandelion root have traditionally been used to stimulate bile production. They also stimulate the movement of bile to the gallbladder and assist the liver in eliminating and breaking down fats. Both these herbs increase bile flow and help to improve fat metabolism.

The Science of Fat Loss

85495058
This week, I was reading an article from the health gurus at Precision Nutrition. Over the years, the team there have done extensive research into the science of fat lossand recently, they released this little gem of a statement: the more we know about food, the fatter we’re getting!

For all our focus on specific nutrients, understanding the effects of certain foods on our bodies, ‘smarter’ diet plans and supplementation to aid weight loss, as well as the development of ‘diet foods’, we’re getting further away from the solution.
Why?
My thoughts are that we’ve forgotten about the simplicity of food – these days, most Aussies are so disconnected from what’s on their plates and no longer really know what it means to eat food in its most complete and ‘whole’ form, let along thinking about where that food came from!
Processed and ‘partial’ foods seem to make up an unhealthy chunk of our diets and perhaps by eating so many fake foods, which our bodies just don’t recognise as real nutrition, we’ve also forgotten how to listen to our own internal hunger cues?
It makes sense then, that in order to be successful in your journey to better health and a lean physique, there are a few old-fashioned rules you should follow.
Her are the main ingredients we reckon you need to maintain a healthy/low body fat:
  • Exercise for at least 5 hours per week (it doesn’t all have to be the intense kind, a walk at lunch time counts too!)
  • Eat whole/unprocessed foods
  • Make sure you’re eating at regular intervals (every 2-3 hours)
  • Sleep 7-9 hours per night (super important – but that’s another article!)
  • Don’t “do” extreme dieting (this inhibits serotonin production and makes you sad, grumpy and more likely to go back to bad eating)
  • Stay consistent with your habits (remember, consistency is key with diet AND exercise, so don’t be impatient)
  • Incorporate non-exercise physical activity (i.e. take the stairs, play with your kids, do the vacuuming, throw a frisbee at the beach)
  • Ignore food advertising – no, you shouldn’t purchase that ice-cream just because the latest Hollywood star looks glam eating it in that shiny advert. I guarantee she/he doesn’t really eat it!
  • Stop counting calories – it’s not a useful habit! Focus on eating real food instead.
According to the guys at Precision Nutrition, other factors associated with lower levels of body fat include:
  • nuts
  • green tea
  • low energy-density foods (fruit & veggies mostly)
  • dietary protein (from lean meat OR non-meat sources)
  • avoiding refined carbohydrates (goodbye pasta, white bread, mashed potato)
  • adequate hydration (aim for 2L of water per day)
  • dietary fibre (veggies, beans, nuts, fruit and dried fruit contain the most)
  • fruits and vegetables
  • regular exercise
  • adequate sleep
  • a supportive social network
And remember, your ‘diet’ is not what causes you to be overweight, or unhealthy… it’s an entire lifestyle thing.
Consistently healthy, active people who see exercise and good eating habits as part of who they are, rarely struggle with weight gain.
So tell yourself you just “don’t do junk”, that you love being active and really enjoy eating clean, whole foods… then live it!

Top 5 Benefits of Aloe Vera

The aloe vera is a short, cactus-like plant that grows in hot, dry regions. Aloe vera has long been prized for its extract, which has a variety of medicinal purposes and can offer many health and beauty benefits. Aloe vera can be found in a myriad of health and beautyproducts today, and some of these benefits may be right for you.

The Top 5:

  1. Anti-inflammatory. Aloe vera acts as an anti-inflammatory and is often used as a topical treatment to soothe and heal damaged skin, especially burns and sunburns. Aloe vera products come in gel and cream forms, from lotions to facial treatments. These aloe products can help with skin inflammation, including acne, uneven skin pigment and puffiness.
  2. Antioxidant. Aloe vera contains flavonoids, which are known to be antioxidants. Antioxidants help to rid the body of free radicals, which can damage healthy skin cells. Aloe vera and other antioxidants have been shown to reduce the signs of aging and are very popular in skin creams and beauty products.
  3. Restoration. Aloe vera promotes the restoration of skin by stimulating fibroblasts, which are skin cells responsible for manufacturing collagen. Collagen is a protein that is important to the structure and elasticity of the skin. Anti-aging products containing aloe vera can help to reduce wrinkles and the signs of aging.
  4. Antibacterial. Aloe vera has been shown to increase blood flow in the skin, which promotes healing. It also has antibacterial properties, which means it may be able to fight off bacterial infections. Aloe vera is a common ingredient in natural creams and serums that are meant to heal injuries and wounds.
  5. Antiviral. Aloe vera may be able to fight viral infections. Some studies have shown that aloe vera extracts may be able to prevent absorption and attachment of viruses. The future of aloe vera might show products that can promote overall healing and well-being and maybe even treat a variety of health problems.

Top 5 pocket friendly yet powerful Android phones

Android as far as smartphones go has done wonders and that too for users across all budget range. Today we have performance savvy smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Sony EricssonXperia Arc which are full throttle as far as performance figures go but true to their performance carry a price tag that is not friendly for many users.

Then there are mid range Android devices which are somewhere in between the high performance and the low performance devices making a value deal for their buyers.

But as the competition in smartphones has grown, Android smartphones have narrowed in to the category of budget friendly feature phones as well. These devices are not low on performance or specifications but they are meant for the users who are just entering the Android arena but with a smaller budget.

Samsung Galaxy Y (Price Rs 7,100)

By far the Samsung Galaxy Y has been the most exciting offering from Samsung coming especially for the pocket conscious people. Even though the Galaxy Y has a lower price tag, it has the features to put any mid range Android device to shame.

The Galaxy Y features a 3 inch capacitive touch based LCD display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution display which despite of a smaller size scores with better display performance. The device is light after having a 1200 mAh battery, which is enough to power this device for up to two days' use.

Galaxy Y gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread as its operating system and combined with Samsung's Touch Wiz user interface, it delivers a nice user experience. It is powered by a fast 832 MHz processor which is by far the maximum that has been offered at this price point.

There have been no major deductions about the hardware being a low cost phone except that the phone has a small 2 megapixel main camera, but it is the best phone money can buy at such a low price point featuring Android Gingerbread.
Spice Mi 310 (Price Rs 6,915)

The Spice Mi 310 is yet another decent Android based offering coming from an Indian manufacturer. The Spice Mi 310 not only is reasonably priced but also it has got decent set of features. The 3.2 inch LCD display comes with a capacitive touch.

It runs a 600 MHz processor, although it might sound average, but when it is considered with the actual performance of the phone and the price. It gives average performance, giving total worth of the money spent. It is available only in brown colour, which may be a sore point for some style conscious users.

The phone looks sturdy, but the 2 megapixel back facing camera is nothing to write home about. For connectivity and data transfer there is 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1. The phone also comes pre-installed with several useful apps including Naukri, Nimbuzz and Facebook. The quality is good and is a match for the better known brands as well.

Micromax Bling 2 (Price Rs 6,200)

The Micromax Bling 2, as the name suggests, is the second generation avatar of the famous Bling handset, and yes this one again is for ladies and girls.

Bling 2 has the same glossy white finish as its predecessor but Micromax has decided to shed the pink highlights, a really good decision indeed. The phone looks classy and definitely is an object of attention.

The 2.8 inch display has a capacitive touch that aids a smoother operation. The resolution of the screen is on the lower side but the Bling 2 compensates for it with ample colour vibrancy and image brightness.

The 600 MHz processor gives it all the power needed for a smooth operation and juice to support multitasking as well for the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. It has 3 megapixel fixed focus camera which clicks good images in daylight but the quality falls badly in the night or low light conditions.

Bling 2 has one memory card slot which is expandable unto 16 GB, but it would be advisable to use 4 to 8 GB external memory to ensure smooth usage. It has a 3.5mm jack for headset and audio connectivity.

Also included in the price is a phone case designed by the famous designer Satya Paul. Worth every penny you spent.

Sony Ericsson W8 (Price Rs 9,600)

The new version of Sony Ericsson W8 runs on Android 2.1 Éclair operating system but the main reason why any Android fan should go for it is that it comes with the Walkman capability exclusive toSony Ericsson.

The phone weighs just 115 grams, and has a 3 inch 320 x 480 pixel resolution based capacitive touch screen display. It houses a 600 MHz processor with a dedicated Adreno 200 graphics processor, which is much better than the other phones within the same price bracket.

Social network lovers would love to know that it has deep Facebook integration, which means it can be accessed from almost any area of the phone, be it a music player, phone book, picture gallery or even calendar.

LG Optimus Net (Price Rs 9,990)

The Optimus Net is the upgrade to the Optimus One that has been quite a powerful contender in this category. Well the Optimus Net continues the legacy of low cost marvels but with the Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system and a beefier processor as well.

The LG Optimus Net has a 3.2 inch TFT display featuring a 320 x 480 pixel resolution in 16 million colour pallets. The display is a little low on resolution and has a lower pixel density of 180 PPI as well. The inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM 7227T chip that includes a 800 MHz single core processor and Adreno 200 graphics engine for dedicated graphics support is a big point for consideration.

There is a 512 MB of RAM to keep things speedy and the 3.2 megapixel camera does its job just well enough, but the 1500 mAH battery gives it excellent battery life.

If you are worried about the plainer looks of the LG phones then don't worry as the phone ships with a complementary snap on back cover in white as well.
